What is Chemical Imaging?
Chemical imaging is a family of techniques that combine spatial information, usually obtained by imaging techniques, with chemical information usually obtained by spectroscopic techniques. e.g. NIR, Raman, NMR etc. Chemical imaging technologies can be divided into global imaging techniques, where spectroscopic information about the sample is obtained simultaneously over the whole field of view of the sample, and mapping techniques where each piece of chemical information is obtain sequentially either point by point or line by line.
Why use Chemical Imaging?
The functionality of many advanced materials (both man-made and natural) is based on the interaction and distribution of the sample components. Changes in the spatial localization of components may cause undesirable performance characteristics. Therefore the ability to chemically identify as well as locate these components is invaluable when it comes to sample understanding.
Benefits of Chemical Imaging
Properties such as chemical domain characteristics, distribution of components, polymorph distribution and content, degree of hydration, location of contaminants or coating and layer thickness can all be determined. This knowledge can be used to help design and manufacture products with superior performance and also to reduce the issues associated with product scale-up. The ability to characterise both the spatial and chemical properties of a sample can also be used for root cause analysis of manufacturing issues.
Software for Chemical Imaging data
Typical chemical imaging techniques produce a large amount of multidimensional data, the so-called hyper spectral image cube. Software specially designed to handle these types of data is critical to extracting the maximum value from Chemical imaging data, providing qualitative information such as chemical distribution maps as well as quantitative data on relative concentration, the size of chemically distinct regions and chemical distribution heterogeneity.
