消費される医薬品の70%は、タブレットやカプセルに入った粉末薬です。
医薬品は、人間や動物の健康にいい影響を与えるために使われます。新薬の研究開発を担う革新的研究者たちは、ここ数十年の間、命を脅かす疾患を防ぎ生活の質や生産性を改善するばかりでなく、平均寿命まで延ばしてきました。医薬品業界は世界経済の中でも重要なセクターの一つです。 - 医薬品のおよそ70%が固体の経口薬、すなわちタブレットやカプセルで、その剤形成分のほとんどは微粒子です。このような成分は、有効成分（API）と賦形剤から構成されています。医薬品中のAPIと賦形剤の粒子径特性は、これらの固体経口薬の製剤にとって非常に重要な性質です。製剤開発段階で固体剤形の特性を判定するには、インビトロ検査が利用されます。この検査により、これらの特性が人体内でAPIのバイオアベイラビリティに与える相互効果を評価することができ、治療効果の予測に役立てることができます。一般に、粒子径が大きいと、固体剤形の造粒プロセスのフローを最適化するのには都合がいいのですが、タブレットやカプセルに入った粒子径の小さなAPIの方が、溶解力や吸収力は高いと言われています。
