Typical Viscotek DSV configurations

All Viscotek DSV systems are built around the Y501 Relative Viscometer plus a number of optional accessories that help with sample preparation or measurement automation. This page demonstrates four of the most common system configurations.

Autoprep system with Vortex.

Viscotek DSV Autoprep Dilute Solution Viscometry system

The Autoprep DSV system provides automated sample preparation and determination of viscosity. The system features the Viscotek Relative Viscometer, the Vortex automated sample prep and injection system, ARV software, and accessories to provide for the ultimate in automation, safety, precision, and accuracy.

The Autoprep system with Vortex comprises of the following modules:

SASP System

Viscotek DSV SASP system for Dilute Solution Viscometry Automation

The Semi-Automated Sample Preparation (SASP) system enhances the Autosampler system by assisting the operator in the sample preparation process. SASP controls the weighing and dispensing operations, automatically compensating for impurities as well as temperature and density variations so that exact concentrations of polymer solutions can be easily and precisely prepared.

The SASP system comprises of the following modules:

Autosampler System

Viscotek DSV Autosampler System for Dilute Solution Viscometry Automation

The Viscotek DSV Autosampler System is perfect for the user with high throughput requirements or the user seeking to minimise operator time. The autosampler is specifically designed to meet the needs of dilute solution viscosity measurement. It mates seamlessly with the Viscotek Y501 relative viscometer to provide automated sample delivery, which frees the operator from the task of manual injection and allows processing of samples in an unattended mode.

The Autosampler system comprises of the following modules:

Manual System

Viscotek DSV manual Dilute Solution Viscometry system

The Manual DSV system using the Y501 relative viscometer is specifically designed to meet your QA/QC requirements. It provides faster analysis than glass tubes, yields higher accuracy and precision, and can provide large savings in solvent exposure, usage and disposal compared to traditional methods.

The manual system comprises of the following modules:

Requires free registration and loginApplication communication: Intrinsic viscosity of polyethylene in TCB at 135 °C
The Y-501 Viscometer is an accurate, efficient replacement for the glass tubes traditionally used in polyethylene solution viscosity measurement. The high degree of automation increases the precision while decreasing the labour and solvent exposure.

The Solomon-Gatesman function is showed to give intrinsic viscosity without extrapolation to zero concentration required by the Kraemer and Huggins methods. Viscosity of cellulose is measured using an automated dilute solution viscometer and compared favorably to glass capillary results.

Viscosity of PET in OCP (Orthochlorophenol) and in 60% phenol / 40% TCE (Trichloroethanol) are measured every 5.5 minute automatically using the DSV. Excellent results are reported for both solvents.
